MUCC was first formed in an area called Ibaraki, Mito about 100 miles from Tokyo in 1997. With the formation Tattoo vocalist, guitarist Miya, Hiro base, and Satochi drummer, MUCC staged the first stage in Mito maichika May 4, 1997.

The name chosen by Miya MUCC came from a children's program Ponkichies, where there are two similar figures of Sesame's Street, which is Muku and Gachapin. MUCC also written as 69 which in kanji can be read as "muku".
